Epigenetic inheritance speeds up evolution of artificial organisms

چکیده
DNA is not the sole medium by which parents transmit information to their offspring. Epigenetic inheritance, in particular, is based on the partial transmission of the cellular state of the parental cell to its descendants. Although the reality of epigenetic inheritance is now firmly established, whether it has an influence on the long term evolutionary process is still subject to debate. To address this question, we used RAevol, an in silico experimental evolution platform, and defined 4 scenarios with static or dynamic environments and with or without epigenetic inheritance. Simulations in dynamic environments show that protein inheritance indeed increases the rate of evolution on the long term. But they also show that it impedes evolution in its very first stages. This negative effect can be explained by instabilities generated by the interference between the two inheritance mediums. On the opposite, the long term gain can be explained by protein inheritance reducing the constraints on the genetic regulation network.

Evidence , Mechanisms and Models for the Inheritance of Acquired Characters
Several different types of epigenetic inheritance system enable alternative functional states to be maintained in cell lineages that have identical DNA sequences. Both random and guided (directed) epigenetic variations can be transmitted by these systems, and lead to heritable modifications in cell structure and function. Although it is usually assumed that epigenetic inheritance does not occur...

Differentiation within multicellular organisms is controlled by epigenetic markers transmitted across cell division. The process of differentiation will modify these epigenetic markers so that information that one cell type possesses can be lost in the transition to another. Many of the systems that encode these markers also exist in unicellular organisms but do not control differentiation. Thu...

Eukaryotic organisms have the remarkable ability to inherit states of gene activity without altering the underlying DNA sequence. This epigenetic inheritance can persist over thousands of years, providing an alternative to genetic mutations as a substrate for natural selection. Epigenetic inheritance might be propagated by differences in DNA methylation, post-translational histone modifications...
متن کاملThree epigenetic information channels and their different roles in evolution
There is increasing evidence for epigenetically mediated transgenerational inheritance across taxa. However, the evolutionary implications of such alternative mechanisms of inheritance remain unclear. Herein, we show that epigenetic mechanisms can serve two fundamentally different functions in transgenerational inheritance: (i) selection-based effects, which carry adaptive information in virtue...
متن کاملWhat Role Does Heritable Epigenetic Variation Play in Phenotypic Evolution?
To explore the potential evolutionary relevance of heritable epigenetic variation, the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center recently hosted a catalysis meeting that brought together molecular epigeneticists, experimental evolutionary ecologists, and theoretical population and quantitative geneticists working across a wide variety of systems. The group discussed the methods available to invest...
